I don't get any problems with the ath5k modules in my setup - and I'm surprised you report difficulty with the madwifi drivers. Admittedly I'm no longer using that driver with my kernel (a variant of 2.6.30-rc5) but I did when I was using the standard xubuntu 8.10 install and it was solid there.

I am using WPA2/TKIP, so maybe thats part of the problem with the ath_5k modules?

Switched to madwifi-hal and no disconnects, though it doesn't reconnect after suspend/hibernate (need to create some scripts to correct that), but perfomance is lower.

I might well give your kernel a try, as long as I generate a suitable initrd for it (I need XFS as / is on it (with /boot being ext2).

I only use memory sticks pro duo for my camera and PSP, but have a USB reader or can just plug either in via USB lead, so no real issue about memory sticks.

Kelly

You should not have many problems with wifi with the ath_5k modules. Mine works fine in my network, even under heavy load. There have, however, been reports of some issues with wpa2 authentication with some wireless APs (take a look at the Aspire One community site at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne for example).

My kernels have support for ext2, ext3 (but not ext4) built in and support for other file systems such as reiser, JFS and XFS built as modules - take a look at the configs on my web site. My kernel 2.6.30 should suit you. Let me know how you get on.

(And no, I still haven't managed to get sony memory sticks working. I may just give up.)

Interesting read. Been having issues with NBR 9.04 on my AspireOne, mainly with wifi. Am just about to try .29/.30/.31-rc1 from mainline to see if the problems are resolved.

Would like to know what FS support you have in this kernel you've built? I use XFS (on my server and desktops making backups simpler).

James

Honestly I don't know. I don't have any xD cards to test. The card reader itself (a Jmicron device) supports the xD card format and my latest kernel (2.6.30) includes the (USB) kernel module for the xD cards (called ums-alauda) so you may wish to give it a try. I'm not overly confident though. The latest kernel also includes modules for the memory sticks and I /still/ can't get the things to work correctly. (apologies to Javier. I'm still trying - and that German site didn't seem to help).

Does your kernel support XD cards?

I want to upgrade to a newer kernel/distro (I've been using Debian Etch with the Aspire One Linpus kernel hacked in) but can't seem to find any kernel that supports reading XD cards. :(

Javier

Thanks for that. My german is next to non-existent so I'll have to rely on babelfish. I'll check out the reference this weekend and see what I come up with. I may rebuild the kernel based on Ubuntu's 2.6.30 karmic release to see if that helps. Currently I'm just using a USB card reader to cover the lack of direct memory stick support. But I'm determined to crack this.

I found this thread where the memorystick problem seems to be solved (it's in German):
